Title

GIS Supervisor, Jeff Kenney, and GIS Developer, Martha Barboza, led a breakout session at the 2022 Esri Energy Resources GIS Conference where they illustrated the ways UL uses 3D web interface to visualize complex subsurface well and lease relationships for the thousands of mineral leases on the 2.1 million acres it manages. This conference, held at Houston's GRB Convention Center, brought together energy sector professionals in an integrated multi-sourced environment to discuss data, technology, skills, and workflows.

Session attendees learned how well and lease data sets can be managed in 3D and how it has enabled UL to enforce topological relationships, split wellbore completions that cross multiple leases for royalty allocation percentages, and improve analysis results. With the introduction of horizontal drilling, the subsurface world of wells and associated leases has become significantly more complex and difficult to manage and conceptualize. Now with the capability of Esri’s scene viewer tools, they showed how UL is able to embed scenes within existing well and lease viewers to expose 3D visualization in parallel with the conventional 2D maps users were accustomed to, which are now also being used for our public-facing well and lease viewers.
